Free legal assistance in Delaware available from the Community Legal Aid Society, Inc.

Community Legal Aid Society, Inc. (CLASI) is a non-profit law firm that provides free legal services to elderly Delawareans, people with low incomes, and people with disabilities.

If you have a legal problem CLASI may be able to help you.
Programs are offered in the following areas:

POVERTY LAW PROGRAM
To be eligible for the poverty law program you must have an income that is not more than 125% of the federal poverty guidelines. In certain circumstances this limit may be exceeded.
This program can assist in areas such as:

  • Housing
  • Government Benefits
  • Domestic Abuse
  • Family Law
  • Immigration Law
  • ELDER LAW PROGRAM
    Anyone who is age 60 or older is eligible. There are no financial eligibility requirements for the Elder Law Program.
    This program covers things like:

  • Powers of Attorney and Advance Health Care Directives (formerly known as Living Wills)
  • Consumer problems such as debt collection and home repair cases
  • Housing problems such as evictions
  • Benefits issues such as Medicaid and Social Security
  • DISABILITIES LAW PROGRAM
    This program provides advocacy services to Delaware residents with physical or mental disabilities. Given limited resources, services are prioritized based on needs identified by consumer and community groups.
    Types of services provided include:

  • Individual Advocacy – including investigation, mediation, negotiation, legal consult-ation and legal representation.
  • Systemic Advocacy – emphasizing major reform efforts on critical issues affecting client groups through negotiation, legislation, regulatory work, and litigation.
  • General Information – regarding available services, rights and remedies to clients and their families, service providers, attorneys and other representatives.
  • Referral Services – provided to those who may be better served by other sources such as state, local or federal agencies, or other advocacy organizations.
  • Community Education/Self Advocacy Training – community education materials and programs are provided as well as training and legal information workshops.
  • While the Community Legal Aid Society, Inc. can be a tremendous resource for Delawareans who qualify for their services, there are some limitations on the things they can do.

    CLASI does not handle the following:

  • Criminal Matters
  • Wills, including simple wills
  • Malpractice Cases
  • Traffic Offenses
  • The Community Legal Aid Society, Inc. has offices within in all three counties within the State.
