Apple Dessert Baking Contest Seeks Entries

Once a popular part of the Apple Scrapple Festival that ended with a lively auction of contest entries as part of the festival’s kick off, the Apple Dessert Baking Contest is once again part of the festival’s tribute to all things apple.

Those with even the slightest notion that their favorite apple creation might be a winner should take note: the contest awards cash prizes and winners enjoy a year of bragging rights as the reigning Apple Scrapple Baking Contest Winner.

The contest is sponsored by TS Smith & Sons, the 105 year old family farm in Bridgeville where the festival is held.

“Our Mother was a great baker and we have all enjoyed cooking with apples for our families,” says Matt Smith, who along with his brothers Charlie and Tom, hold a title as well: they own and operate the state’s oldest commercial apple orchard. “We recognize that what we grow is vital to healthy families and lifestyles, but that people are often too busy to cook, don’t know how to process produce, or believe they can’t afford it. By sponsoring the contest, we are encouraging the public to explore ways to cook with fresh apples and hopefully other fresh produce. Giving them cash for doing it certainly makes it sweeter,” adds Charlie Smith. “We have several varieties of apples available in our farm market every day. These apples are freshly picked and ready for cooking and eating,” says Tom Smith.

The contest features three categories: teen (ages 12-17), adult, and professional and pays cash prizes for first, second, and third place winners in each category. The rules are simple, too: entries have to use fresh apples and the recipe has to be submitted so that winning recipes can be shared with the public so they can try their hand at baking a winner at home.

Entries should be dropped off at the Bridgeville Fire Hall, 2nd Floor, on Wednesday, October 10 between the hours of 9 AM and Noon. Entries can also be dropped off at the Easton, MD location for TS Smith & Sons on Wednesday, October 10 between the hours of 8 AM and 10 AM. An entry is the apple dessert, the recipe, and a completed entry form.

Winners will be announced on Friday, October 12, 2012 at 4:30 PM on the Apple Scrapple Stage at the start of the festival. Winners do not need to be present to accept award.

For those who want to pick their own apples to bake with, the farm offers you pick Fuji apples during the next two weekends on Friday (8AM-11AM), Saturday and Sunday (9 AM to 4 PM). Look for signs ½ mile east of US 13 on Redden Rd in Bridgeville.

More information about the contest, you pick, and the farm is available from TS Smith & Sons by phone (302) 337-8271, email (marketing@tssmithandsons.com), online (www.tssmithandsons.com) or simply by stopping by the farm market.
