ICANN approves new .mobi domain name
ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has approved the use of a new domain name specifically for websites designed for use on mobile phones. Starting in 2006, sites that have been optimized for small screen viewing, limited memory and limited bandwidth will be easily identifiable by the new suffix- .mobi
The new domain name came about due to the intense lobbying by a joint venture of mobile phone companies and handset makers who hope that this will lead to a renaissance of sorts for website site designers who specialize in mobile web pages.
