How do you protect your ideas?

There comes a time in every entrepreneurs life when they slow down just long enough to ask themselves the question;
How do I protect my ideas?

From my experience, three options readily come to mind:

  • Seek the assistance of an attorney for professional, legal advice.
  • Hire a service company, such as Government Liaison Services, Inc., that can help you navigate through various government agencies and registrations.
  • Do the research independently. Visit the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office or the U.S. Copyright Office, download an application and do it yourself.
  • But what if you don’t even know what a copyright is or the difference between a Patent and a Trademark?
    What if you just don’t know where to start?

    I found a great resource that you can download thanks to Anthony Cerminaro by way of BizBangBuzz, a technology and business startup blog out of Pittsburgh.

    The info comes from the American Intellectual Property Association and is “intended to assist the independent or novice inventor in protecting, evaluating and commercializing new ideas and inventions.”

    Before you think that you have found a way to avoid seeking the knowledge of a professional to save a few bucks, make sure you read the introduction from the booklet:

    It is not intended as a “do-it-yourself” book which will allow you to do without the services of a lawyer. However, it is intended to provide you with basic information which will help you to decide whether or not to go to a lawyer in the first place, and which will help you to understand what the lawyer says to you if you do consult with a specific lawyer who specializes in the practice of intellectual property law.
