Jobs report April 2015

The unemployment rate for April fell to 5.4 percent (it’s lowest since May 2008) and 223,000 jobs were created over the month. Here are the highlights from the latest BLS report.

• U.S. payrolls increased by 223,000 in April.
• The private sector added 213,000 jobs. Professional and business services added 62,000 jobs.
• The unemployment rate is now 5.4 percent (from 5.5 percent in March).
• The unemployment rate for college-degreed workers 25 and older is now 2.7 percent (from 2.5 percent last month).
• Temporary help services added 16,100 jobs (up from 13,200 last month).
• February figures were revised up – orig 264,000/now 266,000. March figures were revised down – orig 126,000/now 85,000. Both months taken together – 39,000 fewer jobs than originally reported. (March BLS report – 69,000 fewer jobs were created in Jan/Feb than previously reported.)
• Hourly earnings were up three cents to $24.87/hour. Pay is up 2.2 percent over the last year.
• The next report is due out on Friday, June 5.
