Delaware Technical Community College Joint Finance Committee FY15 Budget Request – New Date

Dr. George will update the committee on College programs and initiatives developed in response to the needs of Delaware’s business and industry. The College’s existing FAA-certified aviation maintenance program has been expanded to prepare highly-skilled and sought-after graduates to work on the engine of the airplane in addition to the shell. The College has also created an accelerated program option for nursing students and increased the size of the EMT/paramedic program in response to the demand from county agencies and the Delaware State Police.

In addition, President George will highlight key partnerships. The Delaware Manufacturing Extension Partnership (DEMEP) had another successful year in helping small and medium-sized manufacturers. A partnership with the Air National Guard allows members to earn associate degrees from the Community College of the Air Force by fulfilling general education course requirements with Delaware Tech. Partnerships with state institutions of higher education and public schools have been created to increase opportunities in entrepreneurship, high school dual enrollment, and STEM programs.

The College is requesting support of the Governor’s recommended budget including continued funding of the Student Excellence Equals Degree (SEED) program. In addition, the College is requesting a stable and reliable funding source for the nursing and allied health programs expansion. The College is also seeking funding for five additional full-time public safety personnel and nine faculty/instructional student support positions.

The College recognizes the value individuals with disabilities can bring to the workforce and supports the Governor’s Employment First workforce development strategy. The College is proposing a pilot program to hire individuals with disabilities with the ultimate goal of expanding the program statewide and is requesting funding for a project coordinator.
